Renewal & Continuing Education
CNCF recertification windows and keeping credentials live — maintaining your certifications.
Certification Lifecycle
Certifications expire. Staying certified requires periodic renewal. Each certification body has its own renewal policy. Understanding these policies helps you plan ahead and avoid letting certifications lapse.
| Certification | Valid For | Renewal Method |
|---|---|---|
| KCNA | 2 years | Retake the exam or CKA/CKAD |
| KCSA | 2 years | Retake the exam or CKA/CKAD |
| CKA | 3 years | Retake the exam |
| CKAD | 3 years | Retake the exam |
| AZ-900 | 1 year | Renew via Microsoft Learn assessment |
Passing the CKA or CKAD automatically renews your KCNA and KCSA certifications. This is because the CKA and CKAD are higher-level certifications that cover the knowledge of the associate-level exams.
CNCF Renewal Policy
CNCF certifications (KCNA, KCSA, CKA, CKAD) have specific renewal windows. You can renew starting 6 months before expiration. There is no limit on how many times you can renew.
- KCNA/KCSA — Valid for 2 years. Renew by passing the exam again.
- CKA/CKAD — Valid for 3 years. Renew by passing the exam again.
- Renewal window — Opens 6 months before expiration.
- Grace period — You have a short period after expiration to renew.
- No partial credit — You must pass the full exam to renew.
Microsoft Renewal Policy
Microsoft certifications (AZ-900, AZ-104, AZ-305, etc.) expire after 1 year. Microsoft provides free renewal assessments through Microsoft Learn. This is the easiest renewal process in the industry.
- Free renewal — No exam fee for renewal assessments.
- Microsoft Learn — Renewal questions are available online.
- No proctoring — Take the assessment from anywhere.
- Open book — You can use documentation during the assessment.
- Renew before expiration — Start the renewal process 6 months before expiration.
Set calendar reminders for 6 months before each certification expiration. This gives you plenty of time to prepare for renewal. Do not wait until the last minute.
Continuing Education
Certifications are snapshots in time. Technology evolves. Continuing education keeps your skills current beyond what certifications test. It also demonstrates commitment to your profession.
- Attend KubeCon — The annual CNCF conference.
- Join CNCF communities — Slack, meetups, and special interest groups.
- Contribute to open source — Kubernetes, Prometheus, Envoy, or other CNCF projects.
- Read release notes — Stay current with Kubernetes and Azure updates.
- Build projects — Apply your knowledge to real-world projects.
Keeping Current
- Follow Kubernetes releases — New versions every 4 months.
- Track CNCF landscape — New projects and tools emerge regularly.
- Read Azure updates — Azure services and features change frequently.
- Practice regularly — Skills decay without practice.
- Teach others — Teaching reinforces your own understanding.
Career Impact
Certifications open doors, but skills keep you in the room. Use certifications as milestones in your learning journey, not as the destination. The combination of certification, hands-on experience, and continuous learning is what makes you valuable.
- Interviews — Certifications get you past the resume filter.
- Salary — Certified professionals earn more on average.
- Credibility — Certifications demonstrate commitment to the profession.
- Networking — The CNCF and Microsoft certification communities are global.
- Confidence — Knowing you are certified gives you confidence in interviews.
A certification proves you can pass an exam. Real expertise comes from building, debugging, and operating systems in production. Use the knowledge from your certification journey as a foundation, and keep building on it every day.
